Overview

The University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Open Learning provides English Language Education, Foundation and Summer School courses to international students.

The University of Edinburgh is consistently ranked among the top 30 universities in the world (27th in the 2025 QS World University Rankings), and its historic capital city is ranked the 6th best student city in Europe and 13th globally. Based in the heart of Scotland’s capital, the University offers a vibrant and welcoming environment, rich in history, culture, and stunning architecture. Edinburgh is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature.

Pre-University Summer School at the University of Edinburgh

The Pre-University Summer School offers students a taste of life at a prestigious UK university. To be eligible, students must be in their penultimate or final year of high school and aged 16–18. Courses are designed and taught by the University of Edinburgh’s experienced academic staff, providing an introduction to the subject matter while developing key skills for undergraduate study and future careers.

The programme includes:

  • University tours and insights into UK university applications from admissions specialists.
  • Opportunities to ask questions and receive key advice on successful applications.
  • Catered accommodation in the city centre, located just off the Royal Mile and a five-minute walk from Arthur’s Seat.

Safety and Support

The University prioritises student wellbeing, with robust safeguarding measures in place, including dedicated resident assistants and compulsory safeguarding training for all staff involved in the summer school.

Student Experience

An extensive social programme is included in the course fee, offering opportunities to socialise, network, and experience Scottish culture.

Campus

The campus is situated just off the Royal Mile, which connects Holyrood Palace to Edinburgh Castle. Facilities include a library, café, and study spaces, with numerous nearby shops and eateries. Students will also have access to the Pleasance Sports Complex and Gym as part of the programme.

The Holyrood campus is approximately 20 minutes from the accommodation, and students will walk to and from campus daily. As Edinburgh’s weather can be unpredictable, packing a raincoat and umbrella is advisable.
